Resident Association Elections Bring Some Change

On Tuesday, December 14, 2004, the SMHA Resident Association held it's election for President and Vice-President. Mark Stevenson, who has been President for the last four years, made this statement at the start of the meeting.

"Over the last four years this organization has seen low points and high points, disappointments and achievements, sorrow and joy. We have seen some of our members either move away or pass on. We have also met new members. We have accomplished a lot together and have a lot to be proud of. But through it all, it has been my privilege to serve you for the last four years. However, I feel it is time for some new leadership at the top.

Betty Jackson has been our Vice-President for the last four years, as well. She has served, faithfully, and with integrity. I have watched Betty's development as a leader and believe at this time, she can serve this organization well as president. Therefore, I am stepping aside in my nomination for president to give Betty the opportunity to serve you in this capacity. I will, instead, accept the nomination to run for Vice-President, challenging Tina Popa".

At that point the candidates were introduced. Betty Jackson, nominated for President, Tina Popa nominated for Vice-President, and Mark Stevenson nominated for Vice-President. With that, President Stevenson presided over the election with the assistance of Jacqueline Jones, SMHA Community Services Director, and Amanda Fletcher, SMHA Executive Director. The results were, Betty Jackson, elected President, and Mark Stevenson elected Vice-President.

Also part of the evening was the Rev. Poor, on behalf of the Resident Association, presenting can crushers to youth involved in our Earth Stewards recycling program, Mark Stevenson presenting Amanda Fletcher, representing the Housing Authority, with decorative cigarette dispensers to be used outside the Housing Authority Main Building, and the Stevenson family rounding out the evening with Christmas Carols. Refreshments were served and the meeting was enjoyed by all attending.
